Good Morning Gators!

It’s back to the Burbs. I try to mix it up but it is pretty tough to find above average breakfast outside of the city.

Southern Belle’s opens at 6. You know I love it! They opened on time. This is Location 4 for them. They haven’t been open long in this spot as you can see by the sign.

The place is clean tidy Chicken and carpet free. It’s sort of country french with a fair amount of mass produced stained glass.   8    The music is Piano Lounge Elevator music. I really have a difficult time believing that someone chose this music on purpose. It makes me think that this is the music that they play in insane asylums.

You know the drill Gators. Window seat and Coffee. The Coffee is  passable. A dark roast with not much personality. If you dark roast a Flip Flop you can make coffee out of it. Just ask the place with the Green Mermaid.   Coffee   7   

The menu is like a big bound book that I neglected to take a pic of. It has a few too many selections for my taste. As usual I look for something that I haven’t had before which is becoming increasingly difficult. On the specials menu is Burnt Ends Benedict. I definitely have NOT had this before. For those of you unfamiliar with Burnt Ends.   BURNT ENDS  This just happens to be a favorite of mine. Done. Ordered. Sunny Side Up Eggs. Oh yes I DID. Biscuits. A small bowl of gravy to sample.

The Eggs were cooked fairly well. Too brown on the bottom and not quite cooked on top.   7   

The Burnt Ends were pretty good. Could have been smoked more. I’m guessing that they were made in the oven.   7   

The Biscuits were pretty tasty. For some reason they were flat on the top as well as the bottom. The Strawberry jam was a bit gooey but tasted good

The Gravy was pretty good. could use a touch of heat.   7   

Overall a decent skillet.   7    

SURPRISE!  Mary Brought some Tiny Corn Muffins   10   How Tiny? Thats a fork in the picture. The muffins had a slight Maple taste to them. They were good and the Peach jam was good   8   A nice treat!

Pork Belly & Eggs

Pork Belly, (2) Eggs Any Style, Served with Hash Browns or Grits, Includes Choice of Toast or (2) Buttermilk Pancakes

I certainly have had my share of Pork Belly and Eggs but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try theirs. I ordered them with Grits and Cakes so I could try them, and Eggs Poached to Scrutinize them.

The Plating was Super Unexciting.

The Eggs were almost Perfect   9   The Pork Belly. Well it was Pork Belly. Crispy from the deep fryer. I don’t think that the Pork Belly was brined or cured. If it was it wasn’t much. Meaty Porky   7     The Grits were pretty standard. A touch under A bit Salty. Needed some Butter or Cheese   7   On a side note if you are going to serve a couple big Pork Hunks you should serve something other than a table knife to cut it.

The Pancakes were decent. Pretty Fluffy and Puffy. That standard vanilla esq mix taste served with Fakle Syrup.   7    Overall this was a   7

Time for the Sweet Stuff

I ordered Stuffed French Toast at Mary’s suggestion.

Brioche, Strawberry Mascarpone & Fresh Strawberry

HOWEVER Chef Frank sent another Surprise!   10    

Banana Bread French Toast

In House Freshly Baked, Banana, Pecans & Caramel

What Frank didn’t know was that I have been chasing the Banana Bread Unicorn for over a year. He had no idea that this was probably a bad idea to serve this to me. I have had a lot of pretty BBFT but none of it is truly French Toast. See the rant page. The Banana Bread was pretty decent. I’m still hoping that someday I’ll get some actual French Toast not just Banana Bread with a thin layer of brown scrambled eggs on it.  OK off the soapbox.  

Overall another   7   

The Stuffed French Toast was another French Toast miss HOWEVER It was Yummy The filling wasTangy Sweet and delish  The Strawberries were Ripe and the Powdered Sugar was Powdery    An overall    8   

That’s it Gators. I liked Southern Belle’s. It was pretty cute and clean. The service was exceptional and the food was above average. There was a need for another good breakfast spot in Barrington. Belle’s is just the place to fill it.  The Music needs to go though.

As for me I’m off to my next adventure.
